Allow us to introduce ourselves...

Allow us to introduce ourselves...

Who are you?

This is our first blog post and I thought I’d begin with a bit of an introduction on who we are and a little bit about the story of Kids@Play.

After writing a few articles for some toy industry magazines, the team suggested I write something for visitors to our website to read.

Let me start by introducing myself, I am Nathaniel Southworth and I am the owner of Kids@Play Ltd.

I have been involved with the business of toys for over 16 years and it all began when I became a Toy Buyer for Asda Wal*Mart.

I was immediately hooked by the category as we had a small team that required us to meet the companies behind big brands such as Lego, Barbie, Bratz, WWE, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, whilst also developing products for our Asda brands. I travelled to China and the USA visiting factories and meeting brilliant characters from the industry.

I hope everyone gets to experience that moment where you realise you’ve found what you want to do for the rest of your life!

Having bought for Asda, I have then worked for three leading toy companies; Vivid Imaginations, Hti and Hornby. Each company provided brilliant learning experiences for me that have shaped my view of the toy industry.

There have been opportunities to leave the industry, but I don’t think anything can come close to it for me. I love it!

I’ve served on the British Toy and Hobby Association (BTHA) council and I’ve been a member of the industry charity, the Fence Club.

I bought Kids@Play Ltd in December 2017.

The selling season in the UK & Eire market is approximately 12 months ahead of when you see the products on the shelves. If you are buying toys for Christmas in 2019 we would speak to the retailers about this from September 2018 to allow time to plan, manufacture and deliver the desired products.

There is a lot of hard work to go from an initial idea to a significant listing selling like hot cakes in toy shops nationally!

Over the course of 2018 we formed the team which brought Neil, James and Ben into Sales & Management. You can read more about them here.

We also continue to be supported by our amazing team, who work tirelessly behind the scenes; Helen, Petra, Sam, Zoe and Nathan.

We have secured the rights to sell some brilliant products and brands which I’ll write more about in other blogs. We have a continually growing toy range, covering many categories.

I am very much an enthusiast for toys and the value of play, so we talk a lot about what we are trying to do and it is quite simple really.

We have set ourselves an ambitious objective:

“To be your favourite toy company”
